You might of seen a flurry of green and gold banners splashed across the media landscape. But really, it's as simple as buying local.

I love my coffee, theirs a few places we can get it in Laidley now. So when I was at Woolies and saw the price of coffee spiking, I thought what about the coffee shops, do they stock it as well? Yes, of course. 

So I now purchase my bags locally, they get my business and I hope they also get to stay as a business. 

So when in Laidley, think to yourself, can I buy it locally first? Because your purchase leads to that business having local work, having local employment opportunities. If you buy local, you're making someone's life a little bit easier.

They now close at 12pm.

Another shop closure: Mitre 10 Laidley

So,

Mitre 10; It was such a wonderful store, people not only got what they needed but people would talk to each other. Retirement was the driver of the closure, ending a classic styled store.

This adds to another closure, the coffee shop in the Laidley strip with the second hand store moving because of flooding and lack of foot traffic. 

Let's hope that the new tenancies will be successful and fit well in the social fabric of Laidley.

The second hand shops have everything from glassware, clothing and dinner sets, even double, queen and king sized mattress's and bed frames. 

Please shop locally, you'll be surprised to see what you can find.

Theirs a problem with Bat's!

Have you seen the Valley's sky's filled up with Flying Foxes? Well in 2024 around 8,000 bat's and lorikeet's have had a mysterious paralysis condition. As a result theirs orphans are being cared for by volunteers.

December to February seem to be the worst times. Researchers still don't know but suspect their is a a toxin in the environment. 

Theirs also been a lot of burnout in the industry as changes in the environment have made this problem worse.

Muddy Laidley Water!

Laidley residents wondering why the water is tasting a but muddy? Worry no more, it's a naturally occurring compound from the recent rains and hot weather combining to breed, yes breed compounds in the water.

This event happens seasonally as well, we have summer every year. 

An explanation from Urban Utilities is posted below:

Naturally occurring organic compounds called Geosmin and Methylisoborneol, which is better known as MIB, in the raw water supply can cause an earthy taste and/or odour in tap water.

Geosmin and MIB are compounds produced from algae or bacteria in our catchments and are responsible for that ‘rain smell’ and can also make our water taste and smell earthy, musty or swampy.

While these compounds may lead to a temporary change in taste and/or odour in water, they are not harmful.

These compounds can increase following particularly hot and rainy weather conditions. 

Sensitivity to taste varies from person to person, so some people may not notice any change while others may.

Cooling the water can help reduce any earthy taste in the tap water. Adding wedges of citrus fruit, mint or cucumber may also help reduce the earthy taste.

Laidley weather & 10 tips to keep warm

Laidley has sure had its coldest weather of late with a majority of centres experiencing 0 and 2 degrees minimums. Cloudless skies are here too but the midday warmth escapes when the wind picks up. 

How to keep warm 

If you're caught out with cold nights you can do these 10 tips things quickly. 

1. Close doors to keep air from stop moving.

2. Set your air-conditioning system to warm and set the temperature around 20 degrees, it will at times look like it's turned off but the room is warmer than the set temperature. 

3. Use door snakes to stop air from moving into a warmer room, you can use a rolled up towel, just make sure it's long enough. 

4. Close curtains and blinds, it creates a warmer air barrier between outside and inside. 

5. Wear lose socks to sleep, use an electric blanket than room warming. 

6. Open up your blinds on the eastern side, slightly ajar so that it gets the warm morning sun and warms up the floors.

7. Create a seal from the windows and inside using glad wrap and tape, this is temporary but creates a heat barrier, just note that some air movement is needed so that you get fresh air

8. Use a humidifier to get it to about 45-50% dry air isn't good for breathing and will make it feel warmer

9. Clear back bushes that might be covering the window preventing morning sun

10. Wear two layers, you'll be happy you did 

Riding path for Laidley Plainland Road

It's been several times that I've seen cyclists and people walking along the road from Laidley to Plainlands.

You would think that a path along the road would be a better place for people to walk or ride along. Not only would this active transport be safer for people, it would encourage people to walk along. 

Laidley Second hand: End of an era

I frequent second hand stores around Laidley and yesterday was the usual fare until I visited Laidley Second Hand in the northern end of Laidley CBD.

I read the notice, thanks for the patronage as we are closing and relocating to Rosewood. I can understand why, with having at least twice having their unsorted stock buried in flood waters. It was amazing seeing that entrance area covered ceilings in old records.

Thanks for providing a avenue for items to have a second life. 

Their new address in Rosewood. It's apparently a very good location as well as a nice building next to the pub on the main street.
